Steelcare Inc of Hamilton Ontario held a celebration on June 21, 2006 to honour the achievement of a LEED Gold Rating from the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). The CaGBC works closely with leaders in industry and government to accelerate the design and construction of high performance buildings through the development and delivery of industry-focused initiatives. The Council holds the license for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in Canada, a building design and construction rating system used to facilitate market transformation through the integration of healthy, high-quality and high-performance elements and practices. LEED certified buildings achieve reduced environmental impacts and lower operating costs. “We are proud to recognize Steelcare’s Plant 19 as the first LEED Canada Gold certified industrial facility in the country,” says Thomas Mueller, President of the Canada Green Building Council. “This project shows that industrial facilities can be built to higher performance standards and sets an example for other industries to follow. Plant 19’s design and construction demonstrate Steelcare’s commitment to environmental protection and reduced natural resource use, and to providing a healthy work place for its employees.” Steelcare’s Plant #19 Gold certification was achieved by surpassing a set of remarkable criteria. Included in this achievement was a 56% savings in heating costs through renewable solar energy sources, improved building envelope insulation, a heat recovery ventilator unit, and highly efficient gas tube heaters. Significantly lower lighting consumption by reduced usage and occupancy sensors was another benefit. In addition, the building was constructed from 46% recycled content which is three-times the rating requirement.

Mr Andrew Pride, Vice President of Minto Energy Management and Board Member for The Canada Green Building Council was on hand to present this very special award to Steelcare company President, Demetrius Tsafaridis. “Attainment of a LEED Rating for an industrial facility in itself, is not an easy feat – and to obtain a Gold Rating is outstanding“, says Pride. Steelcare Plant #19 is North America’s first fully-automated Class-One, two-high coil storage facility and a work-in-process facility for Dofasco’s DSG galvanizing line.

“This is a very important achievement for Hamilton and for Steelcare”, said Mr. Tsafaridis.

“With today’s growing shift towards environmental preservation, we believe we are truly leading the way in showing others in industry what’s possible in environmentally efficient industrial design. Companies can save the environment AND save on operational costs,” continues Tsafaridis.

The celebration was attended by over one hundred guests, including suppliers, customers and representatives from the Hamilton Economic Development Group, and the land owner, the Hamilton Port Authority.
